AirTag 2nd Generation

The Apple AirTag second generation was very much an internal upgrade rather than a redesign, it looks identical to the original at a glance, still a small white disc with the same shape and free engraving option, and it's compatible with all existing AirTag accessories. 

The main change is a new second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the same one used in the iPhone 17 line and the latest Apple Watches, which extends Precision Finding to work from up to 50% further away than before. A new Bluetooth chip also improves general tracking range beyond just Precision Finding. It's ever so slightly heavier than the original, up from 11g to 11.8g, and Apple says the enclosure now uses 85% recycled plastic.

The built-in speaker got a boost too, around 50% louder and audible from roughly twice the distance, paired with a new, more distinctive chime to make it easier to pick out in a noisy environment. For the first time, Precision Finding also works directly from an Apple Watch (Series 9 or Ultra 2 and later), guiding you to a lost item straight from your wrist without needing an iPhone in hand.

A new Share Item Location feature lets you temporarily and securely share an AirTag's location with a trusted contact or, if it ends up lost in transit, with one of over 50 partner airlines. 

Apple also says it's added a set of new anti-tracking protections, including Bluetooth identifiers that change more frequently, though it hasn't gone into detail on exactly how those work. 

Battery, replaceable via the same CR2032 cell, and water resistance both carry over unchanged from the original.
