Notes
The iPhone SE was Apple's first cheap iPhone at $399, and it was the last four-inch phone the company ever made. Screens had grown with every release since 2014, and this was aimed at the people who had not wanted them to.
Apple did not design a new body for it. The case was the iPhone 5s from 2013, the same size and shape down to the millimetre, so three-year-old cases still fitted. What changed was everything inside.
The A9 chip came straight from the iPhone 6s, Apple's current flagship at the time, making this the first cheap iPhone that was not also a slow one. Apple rated it at twice the processing speed and three times the graphics of the iPhone 5s whose body it borrowed.
The 12MP camera also came from the 6s, bringing Live Photos and 4K video recording to a phone costing $250 less. Touch ID carried over from the iPhone 5s, and Apple Pay came with it, which the older phone had never supported.
Four finishes were offered: space grey, silver, gold and rose gold. Storage started at 16GB with a 64GB option above it, which looked thin even in 2016.
It was announced on 21 March 2016, with pre-orders from 24 March, and reached customers on 31 March 2016 at $399.
