Notes
The iPod mini (2nd generation) cost $199 for 4GB and $249 for 6GB, fifty dollars less than the model it replaced while adding a larger option above it. The body was unchanged, as were the screen and the click wheel, though the wheel was now colour-matched to the case rather than left grey.
Battery life more than doubled, from eight hours to eighteen, without the player changing size.
Two things came out of the box to help reach that price. The mains charger and the FireWire cable that the first iPod mini had included were both gone, leaving earbuds, a belt clip case and a USB cable.
Gold was dropped from the range, leaving silver, pink, blue and green in deeper shades than before. Apple then ended the whole line with the iPod nano on 7 September 2005, barely six months after this model went on sale.
It was announced on 23 February 2005 in a press release rather than at an event. There were no pre-orders, and it went on sale worldwide the same day, priced from $199.
The model it replaced was the iPod mini.
