Notes

The AirPods Pro stayed at $249 in October 2021 when Apple changed the charging case and nothing else. The new case took a MagSafe charger, snapping into place magnetically rather than needing to be set down carefully on a Qi pad, and it still charged over Lightning.

The earbuds themselves were untouched. Same H1 chip, same three sizes of silicone tip, same vent to equalise pressure, same four and a half hours of listening with noise cancellation on and more than 24 hours with the case. Apple maintains a separate specifications page for this version, which is the clearest sign it treated the two as different products.

How Apple announced it says something as well. The change got a single sentence inside a press release about the third-generation AirPods, with no availability date of its own. Shops had stock within days.

It was announced on 18 October 2021 at the ‘Unleashed’ event. Apple published no separate release date, and the AirPods Pro simply came with the new case from that day on, still priced at $249.

Check out the AirPods Pro 2 that replaced it.
