iPad mini 4th generation

The iPad mini 4 was 6.1mm thick and weighed 298.8g, 18% thinner than the iPad mini 3 it replaced, which made it exactly as slim as the much larger iPad Air 2 from the year before. The small switch on the side for muting sound was removed, the same change Apple had made to the Air 2.

The screen was bonded into a single piece rather than left with air gaps between its layers, and an anti-reflective coating was added. Those two changes together widened the colour range from about 62% of the sRGB standard to 101%, though the resolution itself did not move.

The A8 chip and 2GB of memory, double what earlier minis had carried, gave the iPad mini 4 what Apple described as a 30% faster processor and 60% better graphics than the mini 3. Silver, space grey and gold were the three finishes.

Storage started at 16GB, with 64GB and 128GB above it. A year later Apple deleted the 16GB and 64GB versions and put a 32GB in the entry slot at the same entry price.

It was announced on 9 September 2015 at the ‘Hey Siri’ event, where it got only a brief mention during the iPad Pro section. There were no pre-orders, and it went on sale the same day, priced from $399.

It was replaced by the iPad mini (5th generation).
