Notes
The iPod (5th generation) played video, which no iPod had done before, and cost $299 for 30GB or $399 for 60GB. Apple put television programmes on the iTunes Music Store on the same day, starting with five shows from ABC and the Disney Channel, among them Lost and Desperate Housewives.
The screen grew to 2.5 inches in colour while the player got thinner. Apple put it at 30% slimmer than the model before it, holding 50% more, at an unchanged price.
Black was offered on a full-size iPod (5th generation) for the first time, alongside the usual white. The only black full-size iPod before it had been the U2 special edition.
Music ran for up to fourteen hours on the 30GB model and twenty on the 60GB, while video managed only two and three.
It was announced on 12 October 2005 at the ‘One More Thing’ event in San Jose. There were no pre-orders, and Apple said only that it would begin shipping the following week, priced from $299.
The model it replaced was the iPod (4th generation).
