Notes

The iPod photo cost $499 for 40GB and $599 for 60GB, and added a two-inch colour screen to a line that had been black and white for three years. It held up to 25,000 photographs alongside the music, pulled across automatically from iPhoto on a Mac or from Photoshop Elements and the My Pictures folder on Windows.

Slideshows could be set to music and sent out to a television or a projector through the dock. On the player itself the click wheel scrolled through the photo library in the same way it scrolled through songs.

Battery life rose rather than fell. The iPod photo managed fifteen hours of music where the greyscale model managed twelve, and five hours of slideshows.

Apple reshaped the range in February 2005, dropping the 40GB model, adding a thinner 30GB at $349 and cutting the 60GB to $449.

It was announced on 26 October 2004 in San Jose, on the same day as the U2 special edition. There were no pre-orders, and Apple began shipping it that day, priced from $499.
