Notes
The iPad Air (4th generation) dropped the home button and took the iPad Pro’s shape, with a 10.9-inch screen running almost to the edges of a body nearly the same size as the 10.5-inch one it replaced. Touch ID did not go under the screen but into the button on the top edge, which was a first for any Apple product.
USB-C was introduced on the iPad Air with this model, the first time a non-Pro iPad had used it, and Apple said transfers over it were ten times faster than over the old socket. The second-generation Apple Pencil worked with the iPad Air (4th generation), clinging to the side magnetically and charging there rather than plugging into the bottom.
The A14 Bionic appeared here before it appeared in any iPhone. Apple showed it on 15 September, a month before the iPhone 12 was announced, though the two reached shops on the same day. Against the previous Air, Apple claimed 40% more processor speed and 30% better graphics.
Five colours were offered rather than three, adding rose gold, green and sky blue to silver and space grey. The price rose by $100, the first increase the iPad Air had ever seen.
It was announced on 15 September 2020 at the ‘Time Flies’ event. Orders opened on 16 October, while it was released to shops on 23 October, priced from $599.
The model it replaced was the iPad Air (3rd generation).
