Notes

The iPad Air (5th generation) moved to the M1, the chip Apple had designed for Macs and had already put in the MacBook Air, the iMac and the iPad Pro. Against the previous Air, Apple claimed 60% more processor speed and twice the graphics.

The iPad Air (5th generation) measured 247.6mm by 178.5mm by 6.1mm, exactly the same figures as the model before it, so nothing changed on the outside beyond the colours, which became space grey, starlight, pink, purple and blue.

The front camera was replaced with a 12MP Ultra Wide one carrying Center Stage, which pans to keep whoever is on the call in frame and widens out when somebody else joins. Cellular models gained 5G, and the USB-C socket doubled in speed to 10Gbps.

The Wi-Fi price held where it was, though the cellular version went up by $20, and storage was unchanged at 64GB or 256GB.

It was announced on 8 March 2022 at the ‘Peek Performance’ event. Orders opened on 11 March, while it was released to shops on 18 March, priced from $599.

The model it replaced was the iPad Air (4th generation).
