Notes

The iPod touch (4th generation) cost $229 and was the first iPod with a Retina display. The screen stayed 3.5 inches across but went from 480 by 320 to 960 by 640, four times as many pixels in the same space, which made text look printed rather than drawn.

Two cameras went in. The one on the front was there for FaceTime, so video calls between two of these, or to an iPhone 4, worked over Wi-Fi. The one on the back recorded video at 720p, though its still photographs came out under a megapixel with no flash and no focusing.

The A4 chip came across from the iPhone 4 and the iPad, and a gyroscope went in alongside it so games could tell which way the device was being tilted. The iPod touch (4th generation) came down to 7.2mm and 101 grams, the thinnest and lightest touch Apple made, and battery life reached 40 hours of music.

It went on sale in 8GB, 32GB and 64GB versions at $229, $299 and $399. A white model joined the black one in October 2011, and a year after that Apple dropped the 8GB and 64GB sizes and brought in a 16GB at $199.

It was announced on 1 September 2010 at Apple’s autumn music event. It reached shops the following week, priced from $229.
