Notes
The iPod touch (6th generation) cost $199 and looked exactly like the one before it, down to the last tenth of a millimetre. Everything Apple changed was inside the same case.
The A8 chip replaced the A5, which was a jump of three years in one go, and a motion coprocessor went in alongside it to handle step counting. The camera on the back went from five megapixels to eight, while the front camera stayed as it was.
Faster Wi-Fi and newer Bluetooth came with it, and gold joined the colours for the first time on an iPod touch, alongside space grey, silver, pink, blue and a red edition. Storage reached 128GB, double what the iPod touch (6th generation) had offered before, at $399.
Two years in, the range was cut back. On 27 July 2017 Apple dropped the 16GB and 64GB sizes and brought the 32GB down to $199 and the 128GB to $299, on the same day it retired the shuffle and the nano.
It was announced on 15 July 2015 by press release rather than at an event. It went on sale the same day, priced from $199.
