Notes
The iPod shuffle (2nd generation) cost $79 and was less than half the size of the plastic stick it replaced. The body was machined from aluminium with a clip built into the back, which Apple pitched as the most wearable iPod it had made.
The USB plug went. Where the first shuffle pushed straight into a computer, this one had no connector of its own at all and came with a small dock to charge and load it through. The only socket on the player itself was for headphones.
A circular pad of five buttons on the front handled play, pause, track changes and volume, and a pair of switches on the top chose between off, playing in order, and shuffling. There was still no screen of any kind. Apple quoted 12 hours of playback from a charge.
It launched in silver alone, holding 1GB and about 240 songs. Four colours followed in January 2007, a different set with a (PRODUCT)RED version in September that year, and a 2GB model arrived in February 2008 alongside a price cut on the 1GB. Steve Jobs said on stage that it was hard to believe the iPod shuffle (2nd generation) was a real music player when you first saw it.
It was announced on 12 September 2006 at the ‘It’s Showtime’ event, where Apple said it would be on sale in October. It ran late and reached shops on 3 November, priced at $79.
