The iPod shuffle (3rd generation) cost $79 and had no buttons on it at all. Play, pause, volume and skipping all moved onto a small control on the headphone cord, and the only thing left on the player itself was a switch with three positions: off, play in order, and shuffle.
VoiceOver was introduced on this model to make up for having no screen. Holding the button on the cord made the player read out the song title, the artist and the name of the playlist, and it did so in fourteen languages. It could also tell you how much battery was left.
It was nearly half the size of the shuffle before it. Apple put it at smaller than a AA battery, at 45mm long, 17mm wide and 10.7 grams, with a clip built into the back and 10 hours of playback from a charge.
It launched in silver and black, holding 4GB and around a thousand songs. In September 2009 Apple added a 2GB version at $59, brought in blue, green and pink, and sold a polished stainless steel model at $99 through its own shops only. Moving the controls onto the cord meant third-party headphones did not work properly with the iPod shuffle (3rd generation) until other manufacturers caught up.
It was announced on 11 March 2009 by press release rather than at an event. It went on sale the same day, priced at $79 for the 4GB model.
