Notes
The iPod shuffle (4th generation) cost $49 and put the buttons back on the front after a generation without them. A ring of five of them handled play, pause, volume and skipping, which meant any pair of headphones worked properly again.
VoiceOver stayed, with its own button on the top edge. Pressing it read out the song, the artist and the name of the playlist, and it did so in 25 languages, up from 14 on the model before.
Battery life went up by almost half, from 10 hours to 15. The body was aluminium again with a clip built into the back, a little under 32mm across and 12.5 grams, and it came in silver, blue, green, orange and pink.
Storage dropped to one option. Where the previous shuffle had been sold in 2GB and 4GB versions, the iPod shuffle (4th generation) came only as a 2GB model holding around 500 songs. Apple changed the colours three more times over the following years but never altered anything else, and Steve Jobs described it on stage as an entry-level iPod that almost everyone could afford.
It was announced on 1 September 2010 at Apple’s autumn music event in San Francisco. It reached shops the following week on 7 September, priced at $49.
