Notes
The Apple Watch Series 7 cost $399 and spent its year on the screen rather than on new sensors. The borders came down to 1.7mm, which gave nearly 20% more screen area than the Series 6 while the case grew by only a millimetre in each size, to 41mm and 45mm. Apple said the always-on display was up to 70% brighter indoors than the year before.
A bigger screen made room for things a watch had not done before. A full QWERTY keyboard appeared, with letters tapped one at a time or joined up with a swipe, so a reply could be typed on the wrist rather than on a phone.
Durability improved in two ways that do not show. The front crystal was over 50% thicker than the Series 6, and the Apple Watch Series 7 was certified IP6X for dust alongside its existing 50 metre water rating. Charging was 33% faster than before, though Apple noted that the faster speed was not available everywhere.
Inside was the S7 chip with 32GB of storage, and battery life stayed at the 18 hours it had been for years. Cases came in aluminium in midnight, starlight, green, blue and red, in stainless steel in graphite, silver and gold, and in titanium.
It was announced on 14 September 2021 at the ‘California streaming’ event, though without a release date. Apple returned on 4 October to say orders would open on 8 October and the watch would reach shops on 15 October, priced from $399.
