Notes

The Apple Watch Series 6 started at $399, or $499 with cellular, and brought blood oxygen measurement to the wrist. Four clusters of green, red and infrared LEDs shine into the skin and four photodiodes read the light that bounces back, which gives a reading between 70 and 100 per cent. It works on demand while the wearer is still, and in the background when they are not moving, including during sleep. Apple stated plainly that the readings were for general fitness and wellness and not for medical use.

Inside was the S6 chip, built on the A13 Bionic from the iPhone 11 and up to 20% faster than the year before. The always-on display was 2.5 times brighter outdoors with the wrist down, and a new altimeter gave elevation in real time all day rather than only during a workout.

The Apple Watch Series 6 came in 40mm and 44mm, in aluminium in a new blue plus silver, space grey, gold and red, in stainless steel in graphite and an updated gold, and in titanium. The Solo Loop arrived with it, a band with no clasp or buckle at all, made as a continuous stretchable loop in either soft silicone or braided yarn.

One thing left the box. Apple removed the power adapter, saying it could otherwise become electronic waste, a month before it did the same with the iPhone 12.

It was announced on 15 September 2020 at the ‘Time Flies’ event. Pre-orders were available on the same day, while it was released to shops on 18 September, priced from $399.
