Apple charged $399 for the Apple Watch Series 8, and what it added was sensors rather than speed. The case stayed at 41mm and 45mm in aluminium or stainless steel, with aluminium in starlight, midnight, silver and red, and stainless steel in silver, graphite and gold.

Temperature sensing was the new arrival. Two sensors were fitted rather than one, the second positioned to reduce the influence of the air around the wrist, and the watch took readings overnight. That let it work out after the fact roughly when ovulation had happened and improve its period predictions, and Cycle Tracking could flag a possible deviation against what had been logged before.

Crash Detection came with it. The Apple Watch Series 8 combines its motion sensors with the barometer, GPS and the iPhone’s microphone to recognise a severe car crash, then counts down ten seconds and calls the emergency services if nobody responds.

The S8 chip inside was the same one Apple put in the Apple Watch Ultra announced on the same day at twice the price. Battery life stayed at 18 hours, with a new Low Power Mode stretching it to 36 with an iPhone nearby. International roaming for the cellular models was promised for later that autumn.

Storage was 32GB and the display reached 1000 nits, both of which the Series 9 would double a year later.

It was announced on 7 September 2022 at the ‘Far out’ event at Apple Park, went up for pre-order the same day and reached shops on 16 September, priced from $399.
