Notes
The Apple Watch Series 9 cost $399 and looked exactly like the Series 8 before it, in the same 41mm and 45mm sizes. The aluminium range gained pink alongside starlight, midnight, silver and red, and stainless steel came in gold, silver and graphite, which would be the last year Apple used that material before switching to titanium.
What changed was the chip and what it let the watch do. The S9 was the fastest Apple had put in a watch, and it brought a new gesture called Double Tap, where tapping the index finger and thumb of the watch hand together twice answers a call, stops a timer or plays music without touching the screen. Siri requests that did not need the internet, such as starting a workout, were handled on the watch itself rather than being sent away, and Siri could read and log health data for the first time.
The display went to 2000 nits, double the Series 8. A second-generation ultra wideband chip brought Precision Finding, which gives the distance and direction to a mislaid iPhone, though only an iPhone 15.
Apple made a point of the environmental side. Any aluminium Apple Watch Series 9 bought with a new Sport Loop band was carbon neutral by Apple’s own account, while the stainless steel models and the other bands were not.
Something unusual happened afterwards. A patent ruling over pulse oximetry meant that from 18 January 2024 the blood oxygen feature was switched off on watches sold in the United States, hardware intact but unusable, until Apple restored it in August 2025 by moving the processing to the paired iPhone.
It was announced on 12 September 2023 at the ‘Wonderlust’ event at Apple Park, went up for pre-order the same day and reached shops on 22 September, priced from $399.
