Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) in three versions: $1,699 for a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo with a 250GB hard drive, $1,999 for 2.66GHz with 320GB, and $2,299 for 2.8GHz with 500GB. All three came with 4GB of memory.

The entry price came down by $300. Apple put some models at up to $300 less than the generation before and made a point of the new $1,699 starting figure. No 15-inch MacBook Pro was ever cheaper again, because the model that replaced it ten months later started at $1,799.

Apple built the battery into the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009), using the charging system and chemistry it had first tried on the 17-inch model five months earlier. It rated the result at up to seven hours of use and 1,000 recharges before the battery fell to 80 per cent of its original capacity, and offered to replace a worn one for $129 or $179.

An SD card slot was added, and the machine could take 8GB of memory, which Apple called a first for it. The 4GB it came with was two 2GB sticks that could be swapped out by hand, a kind of upgrade that left the 15-inch line when the Retina models went on sale in 2012.

The screen measured 15.4 inches at 1440 by 900, glossy and LED-backlit, which Apple said covered 60 per cent more colour than before. Only a glossy finish was offered, with no antiglare option and no higher-resolution choice, both of which the model that replaced it added.

An NVIDIA GeForce 9400M handled graphics on all three, with a second chip, a 9600M GT, added on the two dearer ones. A Mini DisplayPort drove external screens, alongside two USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 port, a Gigabit Ethernet socket, the new SD card slot, audio in and out, a MagSafe charger and an 8x SuperDrive for CDs and DVDs.

It weighed 5.5 pounds at 0.95 of an inch thick, a tenth of a pound lighter than every 15-inch MacBook Pro that followed in the same shape, and an iSight camera sat above the screen.

Apple replaced it on 13 April 2010, when Intel’s Core i5 and i7 came to the 15-inch along with automatic graphics switching, and the entry price went back up to $1,799.

It was announced on 8 June 2009 at WWDC. It went on sale the same day, priced from $1,699.
