Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro (M2 Pro / M2 Max) from $1,999, in two chips and two screen sizes. The 14-inch with M2 Pro was the entry model and the 16-inch started at $2,499, and either size could be specified with the M2 Max instead. There was no plain M2 version of this body, so the cheapest way into the Pro line remained the 13-inch MacBook Pro, which Apple carried on selling alongside it.

The chassis, the 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, the three Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3, the HDMI port and the SDXC slot all carried over from the M1 Pro and M1 Max models of 2021, and the finishes were silver and space gray. The work went into the chips and the wireless.

Wi-Fi 6E was introduced here, which Apple put at up to twice the speed of the previous generation, and the HDMI port now drove 8K displays, a first for the Mac. The Mac mini announced the same day gained both at the same time.

The M2 Max could take up to 96GB of memory, where the M1 Max had topped out at 64GB. The 16-inch lasted the longest of the two sizes, rated at up to 22 hours of movie playback against 18 hours for the 14-inch, and Apple called that the longest battery life ever in a Mac.

The 14-inch opened at $1,999 and the 16-inch at $2,499, exactly as the M1 Pro and M1 Max models had fifteen months earlier.

It had the shortest run of any Apple silicon MacBook Pro. The M3 models were announced nine months after it went on sale, and Apple dropped it from the line-up the same day.

It was announced on 17 January 2023, by press release rather than at an event. Orders opened the same day, while it was released to shops on 24 January, priced from $1,999.
