Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro (M4) from $1,599, in three chips and two screen sizes. The 14-inch with the plain M4 was the entry model, the 14-inch with M4 Pro was $1,999, and the 16-inch started at $2,499. The M4 Max sat above both.

Which chip was chosen changed more than speed. The base M4 had three Thunderbolt 4 ports, while the M4 Pro and M4 Max models had Thunderbolt 5, so two laptops that looked identical had different sockets on the side.

Battery life ran against price within the 14-inch size. Apple rated the base MacBook Pro (M4) at 24 hours of video streaming, the M4 Pro at 22 and the M4 Max at 18, so the cheapest 14-inch lasted the longest. The 16-inch with M4 Pro matched the base model at 24 hours.

The Liquid Retina XDR display stayed at 14.2 inches and 3024 by 1964, reaching 1600 nits at its brightest for HDR. A nano-texture option was introduced, etched into the glass rather than coated onto it, as a way of cutting glare. Above the screen sat a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, which keeps a face in frame as it moves.

Memory started at 16GB on the base model, 24GB with the M4 Pro and 36GB with the M4 Max, running to 128GB at the top. Both sizes came in space black and silver.

It was announced on 30 October 2024. Pre-orders opened the same day, while it was released to shops on 8 November, priced from $1,599.
