Notes

The Apple Watch went on sale at $349 and was not one product but three. Apple Watch Sport came in aluminium at $349 and $399, Apple Watch in stainless steel from $549 to $1,099, and Apple Watch Edition in 18-karat rose or yellow gold from $10,000. The watch inside each was the same, in 38mm and 42mm cases.

Apple showed it a long time before selling it. The first public demonstration came in September 2014 and nobody could order one until the following April, a gap of more than seven months.

The screen was a Retina display with Force Touch, which could tell a press from a tap and used that as a way of opening menus on a screen with no room for them. The watch was rated IPX7, which meant splashes and rain rather than swimming, and Apple advised against submerging it. Battery life was 18 hours, the figure the Apple Watch would keep for the next five generations.

It was announced on 9 September 2014 at the ‘Wish we could say more’ event. Pre-orders were available from 10 April 2015, while it was released to shops on 24 April, priced from $349.
