Notes

Apple redesigned the watch for the Apple Watch Series 4, which cost $399 with GPS or $499 with cellular. The case sizes moved from 38mm and 42mm to 40mm and 44mm, and the display grew by over 30% while the watch itself stayed close to the size it had been. The back was changed to black ceramic and sapphire crystal, and the speaker was 50% louder.

Two health features arrived with it. The Apple Watch Series 4 could take an electrocardiogram, which Apple said had been granted a De Novo classification by the FDA, though the app was not on the watch at launch and was promised for later that year in the United States only. Fall detection came with it and did work from day one, reading up to 32 g-forces and the trajectory of the wrist, then calling the emergency services on its own if nobody moved for sixty seconds after the alert.

The S4 chip was twice as fast as the year before. Storage was 16GB, and battery life stayed at 18 hours.

Cases came in aluminium in silver, gold and space grey, and in stainless steel in gold, silver and space black.

It was announced on 12 September 2018 at the ‘Gather round’ event. Pre-orders were available from 14 September, while it was released to shops on 21 September, priced from $399.
