The Apple Watch Series 5 cost $399 with GPS, or $499 with cellular, and finally let the screen stay on. The always-on Retina display dimmed when the wrist went down and returned to full brightness on a raise or a tap, which meant the time was simply there rather than appearing when the arm was lifted.

A compass came with it, reporting heading, incline, latitude, longitude and elevation through a new app, and it could be added to a watch face as a complication.

Apple sold the Apple Watch Series 5 in four case materials, more than any year before it. Aluminium and stainless steel carried over, white ceramic returned, and titanium was new, in two brushed finishes. The ceramic version was offered only with cellular.

Cellular models could call the emergency services directly in more than 150 countries, whether or not the wearer had a plan in that country. Inside was the S5 chip with 32GB of storage, and battery life stayed at the 18 hours it had been since the beginning.

It was announced on 10 September 2019 at the ‘By innovation only’ event. Pre-orders were available on the same day, while it was released to shops on 20 September, priced from $399.
