Notes

The iPod nano (4th generation) cost $149 and went back to being tall and thin after a year of being short and wide. The body curved in aluminium and glass, a quarter of an inch thick, which made it the thinnest iPod Apple had made.

An accelerometer went in for the first time. Shaking the nano skipped to a random track, and turning it on its side switched the screen into Cover Flow, where games and video would only play in that position anyway.

The screen stayed two inches across but stood upright rather than lying on its side, which is what let the body get narrow again. Genius arrived with it, building a playlist of songs that went together from one you picked, and the FM radio could tag a track to buy later with the Radio Remote.

Nine colours were offered, and for the first time on a nano every one of them came in both sizes. The iPod nano (4th generation) held 8GB at $149 or 16GB at $199, in silver, purple, blue, green, orange, yellow, pink, black or a red special edition.

It was announced on 9 September 2008 at the ‘Let’s Rock’ event. It went on sale worldwide the same day, priced from $149.
