Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2006) from $1,999, which bought a 1.83GHz Core Duo, 512MB of memory, an 80GB hard drive and 128MB of video memory. The dearer model at $2,499 ran at 2.0GHz with 1GB of memory, a 100GB drive and 256MB. Both had a 15.4-inch screen at 1440 by 900.

The machine got faster between its announcement and going on sale. Apple announced it in January at 1.67GHz and 1.83GHz, and when it shipped five weeks later the same two prices bought 1.83GHz and 2.0GHz, with 2.16GHz available to order.

It was the first Mac laptop with an Intel processor, which Apple put at up to four times faster than the PowerBook G4 it replaced. Software written for the older PowerPC chips ran through a translator Apple called Rosetta.

MagSafe was introduced on the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2006). This is a power connector held on by magnets, so a cable caught by a foot pulls free instead of dragging the laptop off the desk. Apple described it as new and patent-pending.

An iSight camera was built into the lid for video calls, and an infrared Apple Remote came in the box for Front Row, which put music, photos and films on the screen from across the room.

FireWire 800 did not make it. The PowerBook G4 it replaced had the faster socket, while this one carried only FireWire 400, and Apple did not put the port back until October that year.

A DVI socket drove external screens with a VGA adapter in the box, alongside a Gigabit Ethernet socket, two USB 2.0 ports, audio in and out with optical digital sound, and an ExpressCard/34 slot.

Apple replaced it on 24 October 2006, when Core 2 Duo processors came in, the memory doubled and FireWire 800 returned.

It was announced on 10 January 2006. Pre-orders opened the same day, while it began shipping in the week of 14 February, priced from $1,999.
