Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2006) in two versions: $1,999 for a 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo with 1GB of memory and 128MB of video memory, or $2,499 for 2.33GHz with 2GB and 256MB. Both had a 15.4-inch screen at 1440 by 900 and a 120GB hard drive.

Memory doubled at both prices. The cheaper model went from 512MB to 1GB and the dearer one from 1GB to 2GB, with neither price moving, and the ceiling rose from 2GB to 3GB.

A FireWire 800 port was introduced on the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2006). The original model nine months earlier had only FireWire 400, and the faster socket joined it rather than replacing it, so the machine carried both.

A glossy screen was an optional extra, with the matte finish standard. By 2010 the position had reversed and an antiglare screen was the one Apple charged for.

A DVI socket drove external screens, with a VGA adapter in the box and Dual Link support for Apple’s 30-inch Cinema HD Display. Alongside it were a Gigabit Ethernet socket, two USB 2.0 ports, both FireWire sockets, audio in and out with optical digital sound, an ExpressCard/34 slot, an infrared Apple Remote and a 6x SuperDrive that could burn double-layer discs.

Apple’s own subhead put the line at up to 39 per cent faster. The 15-inch shipped on the day of the announcement, while the 17-inch model in the same release was a week behind it.

Apple replaced it on 5 June 2007, when an LED-backlit screen came to the 15-inch, the graphics moved to NVIDIA and the memory ceiling rose to 4GB.

It was announced on 24 October 2006, by press release rather than at an event. It went on sale the same day, priced from $1,999.
