Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011) from $1,799, with a 2.2GHz quad-core processor, 4GB of memory, a 500GB hard drive and AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics, or $2,199 for 2.4GHz, a 750GB drive and a 6770M with twice the video memory.

Apple never announced it. There was no press release and no event, and the machines appeared in the online store on 24 October 2011 with faster processors than the ones they replaced. The prices did not move either, staying at $1,799 and $2,199.

A Thunderbolt socket rated at 10Gbps sat beside two USB ports rated at 480Mbps, so the fastest and slowest connections on the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011) were more than twenty times apart. USB 3 did not reach the 15-inch MacBook Pro until the following summer.

An 8x SuperDrive for CDs and DVDs went into the side, with a Gigabit Ethernet socket, a FireWire 800 port, an SD card slot, separate audio in and out, a MagSafe charger and a Kensington lock slot.

The screen measured 15.4 inches at 1440 by 900, glossy as standard, with an antiglare finish available instead and a higher 1680 by 1050 resolution offered as an upgrade in either finish.

Memory came as two 2GB sticks that could be swapped out, up to a total of 8GB, and both models were sold with 4GB. The machine that replaced it doubled that to 8GB on the dearer version at the same $2,199. Storage was a 5400rpm hard drive as standard, with a faster 7200rpm one or flash up to 512GB available instead, and the 77.5 watt-hour battery was rated at up to 7 hours of web browsing.

Apple replaced it on 11 June 2012, when the Mid 2012 model brought USB 3 and switched the graphics from AMD to NVIDIA, and the first Retina MacBook Pro went on sale beside it the same day.

It went on sale on 24 October 2011, with no announcement, no event and no press release. Apple simply updated its online store, and the price stayed at $1,799.
