Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012) from $1,799, with a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, 4GB of memory and a 500GB hard drive, or $2,199 for 2.6GHz, 8GB and 750GB. Apple’s own announcement called it the current generation MacBook Pro, to set it apart from the Retina model launched the same morning.

It cost $400 less than that Retina model and used the same NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M graphics chip, though the cheapest version had half the video memory at 512MB. What the extra money bought was the sharper screen, flash storage in place of a hard drive and a thinner body.

An 8x SuperDrive for CDs and DVDs sat in the side, with a Gigabit Ethernet socket, a FireWire 800 port, two USB 3 ports, one Thunderbolt socket, an SD card slot, separate audio in and out, and a Kensington lock slot. The MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012) was the last 15-inch model to carry any of the first three.

The battery held 77.5 watt-hours and Apple rated it at up to 7 hours of web browsing. The Retina model matched that figure exactly, from a 95 watt-hour battery.

The screen stayed at 1440 by 900, with 1680 by 1050 available as an option, against the 2880 by 1800 of the Retina machine. Memory stopped at 8GB, half the Retina ceiling, and the body weighed 5.6 pounds at 0.95 of an inch thick, where the Retina one was 4.46 pounds at 0.71.

Storage could be taken to a 1TB hard drive or swapped for flash up to 512GB, and a 720p FaceTime HD camera sat above the screen with stereo speakers and a subwoofer below it.

Apple kept it on sale for sixteen months. It was dropped on 22 October 2013, the day the Retina models were updated, while the 13-inch version of the same design carried on in the range for years afterwards.

It was announced on 11 June 2012 at WWDC, alongside the first Retina MacBook Pro. It went on sale the same day, priced from $1,799.
