Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro 15-inch (2015) from $1,999, with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage, or $2,499 for a faster processor, 512GB and separate AMD graphics. Both had a 15.4-inch screen and four processor cores.

The Force Touch trackpad was introduced on the MacBook Pro 15-inch (2015). Rather than hinging at the top, it used sensors to measure how hard a finger pressed and a small motor underneath to produce the feeling of a click, so it clicked the same wherever it was pressed. How much pressure counted as a click could be changed in settings.

A MagSafe 2 charger, two Thunderbolt 2 sockets, two rectangular USB ports, an HDMI socket, an SD card slot and a headphone jack all sat along the sides, with twelve physical function keys above the keyboard. This was the last MacBook Pro built that way.

The battery held 99.5 watt-hours, rated at up to 9 hours of web browsing. When Apple later described the 16-inch model of 2019 as having the largest battery it had ever put in a Mac notebook, at 100 watt-hours, this was the machine it had beaten, by half a watt-hour.

Storage was up to two and a half times faster than the generation before, which Apple put at up to 2GBps, and the AMD graphics in the dearer model were up to 80 per cent quicker. The screen stayed at 2880 by 1800 and 300 nits, a figure the 2016 redesign would raise to 500.

Apple kept it on sale for more than three years. The redesigned model arrived in October 2016 and this one carried on beside it as the cheaper choice, outliving that 2016 machine, which was itself dropped in June 2017. This one and the 2017 model were both withdrawn on the same day, 12 July 2018.

It was announced on 19 May 2015, by press release rather than at an event. It went on sale the same day, in Apple’s online store and its retail shops at once, priced from $1,999.
