Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) from $1,999, with 16GB of memory, 256GB of storage and four processor cores, or $2,499 for a faster processor, 512GB and NVIDIA graphics alongside the Intel ones.

Memory on the cheaper model went from 8GB to 16GB with no change in price, so the entry machine suddenly held as much as the top one. The top model’s price came down at the same time, from $2,599 to $2,499, which Apple does not often do.

NVIDIA graphics came in the dearer version, a GeForce GT 750M with its own 2GB of memory, switching in automatically when a program needed it. The model that replaced it a year later moved to AMD, and no 15-inch MacBook Pro carried an NVIDIA chip again.

The trackpad still hinged at the top and clicked like a button, which made the MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) the last 15-inch to work that way. The model after it replaced the hinge with sensors and a small motor that produced the feeling of a click without anything actually moving.

A MagSafe 2 charger, two Thunderbolt 2 sockets, two rectangular USB ports, an HDMI socket, an SD card slot and a headphone jack sat along the sides, with twelve physical function keys above the keyboard.

The battery held 95 watt-hours, rated at up to 8 hours of web browsing, and the screen stayed at 15.4 inches and 2880 by 1800. It weighed 4.46 pounds and measured 0.71 of an inch thick.

Apple replaced it on 19 May 2015 with a model that brought the Force Touch trackpad, faster storage and an extra hour of battery life, so this one was on sale for a little under ten months.

It was announced on 29 July 2014, by press release rather than at an event. It went on sale the same day, in Apple’s online store and its retail shops together, priced from $1,999.
