iPhone 17

The iPhone 17 brought ProMotion's 120Hz adaptive refresh and an always-on display to the standard line for the first time, features that had been Pro-exclusive until this generation, on a larger 6.3-inch screen. The front glass moved to Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple rates at around three times the scratch resistance of the iPhone 16's. Colours changed completely from the previous line-up, replaced with Lavender, Sage and Mist Blue alongside Black and White. Storage doubled to a 256GB starting point, with the 128GB tier retired, and 512GB as the only step-up.

Both rear cameras moved to 48MP. The main Fusion lens uses a 2x "optical quality" crop in place of a dedicated telephoto, while the Ultra Wide camera jumped hugely in resolution over the 16's 12MP sensor, outputting 24MP images by default. The front camera grew to 18MP, gaining a Centre Stage system that reframes a shot into portrait or landscape automatically depending on how the phone's held and who's in frame.

The A19 chip carried over from the Pro models minus their extra GPU core and vapour chamber cooling, but still delivered a real step up in daily performance over the iPhone 16, along with up to 30 hours of video playback, about eight hours more than its predecessor managed.
