Notes

With the introduction of a new button, the iPhone 16 added Camera Control, which was a  pressure-sensitive butto on the right edge that opens the camera with a light press, takes the shot with a firm one, and changes zoom or exposure as you slide a finger along it.

The Action button came down from the Pro models too, replacing the ring/silent switch that had been on every iPhone since 2007. It can be set to open the camera, turn on the torch, start a voice memo, run a shortcut or trigger a Focus mode.

The rear cameras moved into a vertical arrangement, which was not just styling. Stacking the two lenses that way lets the phone record spatial photos and video for the Vision Pro. The main camera stayed at 48MP with a 2x zoom cropped from the centre, while the ultra wide gained autofocus for close-up macro shots.

The A18 chip brought the iPhone 16 to the same generation as that year's Pro models, which had not been true of recent standard iPhones. Apple quoted processing 30 percent faster and graphics 40 percent faster than the iPhone 15, and the chip made this the first standard iPhone able to run Apple Intelligence.

Five colours were available, including black, white, pink, teal and ultramarine. The storage started at 128GB with 256GB and 512GB above it.

The iPhone 16 was announced on 9 September 2024 at the 'It's Glowtime' event, with pre-orders from 13 September. The first orders reached customers on 20 September 2024 at $799.
