Notes

The iPhone 16 Pro cost $999 and was the first Pro to come in two larger sizes, 6.3 inches here and 6.9 inches on the Pro Max. Apple called the pair the largest iPhone displays it had made, and said the Pro line had the thinnest borders of any Apple product, which is how the screen grew without much happening to the body. The case was titanium again, in black, natural, white and a new desert finish.

A new control appeared on the side. Camera Control is a button with a capacitive sensor built into it, so a press opens the camera and a second press takes the shot, and sliding a finger along it changes zoom or exposure without touching the screen.

The camera system was where most of the money went. A 48-megapixel Fusion camera with a faster sensor sat alongside a new 48-megapixel ultra wide, and the 5x telephoto came to both Pro models for the first time, having been fitted only to the iPhone 15 Pro Max the year before. Video went to 4K at 120 frames a second in Dolby Vision, usable either as slow motion or as ordinary footage, and four studio-quality microphones were added for sound.

The A18 Pro chip ran the iPhone 16 Pro, and Apple rated it at 27 hours of video playback. Storage started at 128GB and ran to 1TB.

One thing was missing at launch. Apple Intelligence, the set of features the phone had been introduced alongside, was not on it when it reached shops. Apple said the first of it would arrive in beta the following month in iOS 18.1.

It was announced on 9 September 2024 at the ‘It’s Glowtime’ event at Apple Park, went up for pre-order on 13 September and reached shops on 20 September, priced from $999.
