Notes

The iPhone 4 was Apple's fourth iPhone and the first that looked nothing like the ones before it. Glass front and back, a stainless steel band round the edge, and flat sides replacing the curved plastic of the iPhone 3GS. At 9.3mm Apple called it the thinnest smartphone yet made.

Apple also introduced a word for the screen. Retina meant that at normal reading distance the eye could not pick out individual pixels, and at 960 by 640 in three and a half inches, there were four times as many as on the 3GS. The term has been attached to Apple screens ever since.

A second camera appeared on the front. That made FaceTime possible, Apple's video calling service, though at launch it only worked over wifi rather than the mobile network. The rear camera rose to 5 megapixels and could record high definition video.

The steel band round the edge was also the aerial, and that caused trouble. Gripping the lower left corner with a bare hand bridged a gap in the band and weakened the signal, sometimes enough to drop a call. Apple offered free cases to anyone who asked.

A white version was announced alongside the black one but proved difficult to manufacture. It did not reach shops until April 2011, ten months late.

The iPhone 4 sold at $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB, both requiring a new two-year AT&T contract, which was how American phones were sold then. It stayed in the range until September 2013, over three years, second only to the 3GS for longevity.

It was announced on 7 June 2010 at the 'WWDC 2010' keynote, with pre-orders from 15 June, and reached customers on 24 June 2010 at $199.
