Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro 15-inch (2018) from $2,399, with a 15.4-inch screen, 16GB of memory as standard and six processor cores. Memory could be taken to 32GB, which Apple presented as new for the line, and storage ran as far as 4TB.

The Apple T2 chip was introduced on the MacBook Pro 15-inch (2018), a second processor Apple had first used in the iMac Pro. It handled secure start-up and encrypted the drive as data was written to it, and it brought “Hey Siri” to the Mac for the first time by listening for the phrase on its own.

True Tone was introduced here too, on the main screen and on the Touch Bar. It shifts the colour of a display to suit the light in the room, so white keeps looking white under a warm lamp as well as under daylight.

The butterfly keyboard was changed for the third time, which Apple presented as a change for quieter typing. Within a year Apple had added this model to its free keyboard repair programme, which covered keys that repeated themselves or failed to register at all.

Twelve days after it went on sale, Apple released a software fix for it. Reviewers had found that the fastest configuration ran slower under sustained load than the cheaper one, and Apple put this down to a missing digital key in the firmware that had left the thermal management working incorrectly. The update went out on 24 July 2018.

The screen stayed at 15.4 inches and 2880 by 1800 with 500 nits of brightness. Four Thunderbolt 3 ports handled charging, displays and everything else. The battery held 83.6 watt-hours, rated at up to 10 hours of web browsing or video playback, and the machine came in silver and space gray at just over four pounds.

Apple replaced it on 21 May 2019, when a new 15-inch model arrived with an eight-core option, so this one was on sale for a little over ten months.

It was announced on 12 July 2018, by press release rather than at an event. It went on sale the same day through apple.com, while Apple Stores and resellers received it later that week, priced from $2,399.
