Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro 16-inch (2019) from $2,399, rising to around $6,099 for the fullest specification. It replaced the 15-inch model, which Apple took off sale the same day without mentioning it in the announcement, ending a size that had been the large MacBook Pro since the first one in 2006.

The Magic Keyboard was introduced on the MacBook Pro 16-inch (2019), built on a scissor mechanism with a millimetre of travel. It replaced the butterfly keyboard Apple had used since the 12-inch MacBook of early 2015, which had drawn enough complaints to earn its own free repair programme. A physical Escape key came back with it and the arrow keys returned to an inverted T, though the Touch Bar itself stayed.

The screen measured 16 inches at 3072 by 1920, which worked out at 226 pixels per inch and 500 nits of brightness. Four Thunderbolt 3 ports and a headphone jack were the only connections, with no HDMI port and no card slot, both of which Apple had removed in 2016 and would not put back until 2021.

A 100Wh battery went in, which Apple called the largest it had ever used in a Mac notebook, rated at up to 11 hours of web browsing or movie playback. Storage started at 512GB and could be taken as far as 8TB, which Apple called the largest solid-state drive ever put in a notebook, and memory could reach 64GB.

A six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers handled sound, alongside a three-microphone array Apple said cut hiss by 40 per cent. It came in silver and space gray and weighed 4.3 pounds.

Apple dropped it from the line-up on 18 October 2021, the day the 16-inch returned with Apple’s own M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, which made this the last Intel MacBook Pro at this size.

It was announced on 13 November 2019, by press release rather than at an event. It went on sale the same day, while Apple Stores and resellers received it later that week, priced from $2,399.
