Notes

Apple sold the MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) from $1,999, with 8GB of memory, 256GB of storage and four processor cores, or $2,599 for a faster processor, 16GB of memory, 512GB and NVIDIA graphics alongside the Intel ones.

It went on sale the day Apple stopped charging for its own apps. The same announcement said that iWork and iLife were now free with every new Mac, which put the word processor, the spreadsheet, the presentation software, the video editor and the music software in the box at no extra cost.

Thunderbolt 2 was introduced on the MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), with two sockets each carrying up to 20Gbps, double what the port had managed before. Wi-Fi moved to the 802.11ac standard at the same time, which Apple put at up to three times faster than the one it replaced.

Storage moved to a PCIe connection, which Apple said read up to 60 per cent faster than the generation before. Intel Iris Pro handled the graphics on both versions, and the dearer one added an NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with its own 2GB of memory that switched in when a program needed it.

The battery held 95 watt-hours, rated at up to 8 hours of web browsing, which Apple put at an hour more than the model before it.

A MagSafe 2 charger, two Thunderbolt 2 sockets, two rectangular USB ports, an HDMI socket, an SD card slot and a headphone jack sat along the sides, with twelve physical function keys above the keyboard. It weighed 4.46 pounds and measured 0.71 of an inch thick.

Apple replaced it on 29 July 2014 with a model that ran a little faster, gave the cheaper version 16GB of memory as standard and brought the top price down by $100, so this one was on sale for just over nine months.

It was announced on 22 October 2013 at the ‘We still have a lot to cover’ event in San Francisco. It went on sale the same day, priced from $1,999.
