Notes

The iPhone 5 was Apple's sixth iPhone and the first to change the screen size. Every model from 2007 onwards had used a 3.5-inch display. This one went to 4 inches, and Apple stretched it taller rather than wider so a thumb could still reach the far corner of the screen.

The 30-pin dock connector went too. Apple had used it on iPods and iPhones since 2003, so a decade of docks, speakers, alarm clocks and car kits stopped fitting overnight. Lightning replaced it. The new plug was far smaller and could go in either way up, and Apple sold an adapter separately for everything it had just made obsolete.

The body changed from glass to anodised aluminium, with edges cut by diamond tools to leave a bright chamfer. At 7.6mm Apple said it was 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S, despite the larger screen.

LTE arrived, the faster mobile standard that American networks had been building out, along with the A6 chip which Apple rated at twice the speed of the one before it.

The software caused trouble. The iPhone 5 shipped with iOS 6, which dropped Google Maps for Apple's own version, and the replacement was badly wrong in places. Within a week Tim Cook published an open letter apologising and suggesting people use competing map apps until it improved.

It sold for $199 with 16GB, $299 with 32GB and $399 with 64GB, all requiring a two-year contract. An unlocked version did not appear until that November, at $649.

It was announced on 12 September 2012 at the 'iPhone 5' event, with pre-orders from 14 September, and reached customers on 21 September 2012 at $199.
