Notes

The iPhone 5s was Apple's flagship phone at $199, and it introduced the fingerprint reader. Touch ID sat under a sapphire cover in the home button, and it unlocked the phone and approved purchases without a passcode. The print itself never left the phone, stored inside a walled-off part of the chip Apple called the Secure Enclave rather than on any server.

The A7 chip inside was the first 64-bit processor in any phone. That is a measure of how much data the chip handles at once, and Apple described it as desktop-class. The claim was ahead of its time, since no rival phone had anything comparable for about a year.

A second chip sat alongside it. The M7 handled readings from the motion sensors on its own, so the phone could count steps all day without waking the main processor and draining the battery.

The camera gained a larger sensor, a wider aperture and a flash with two colours of light that mixed to suit the room. Slow motion video arrived too, recording at 120 frames a second.

Gold joined silver and space grey as the colours. It was widely mocked when announced, sold out for months afterwards, and has stayed in the range ever since.

It was announced on 10 September 2013 at Apple's September event, and reached customers on 20 September 2013 at $199.
