Notes

Apple sold two new sizes of phone in September 2014, and the iPhone 6 Plus was the larger of the pair at 5.5 inches, starting at $299 with a two-year contract. Its display was the first on an iPhone to run at 1920 by 1080, at 401 pixels per inch. Apple put the viewing area at 88% more than the iPhone 5s, and the phone measured 158.1mm tall and 7.1mm deep at 172g.

It shared the A8 chip and M8 motion coprocessor with the smaller model, but the camera was not identical. Optical image stabilisation was fitted to the iPhone 6 Plus only, which Apple said compensated for hand shake in low light. Both phones used the same 8-megapixel iSight sensor with Focus Pixels for faster autofocus, and both launched with Apple Pay, which arrived as a free iOS 8 update in October.

The battery figures were the clearest benefit of the extra size. Apple rated it at up to 24 hours of talk time on 3G, 14 hours of HD video, 80 hours of audio and 16 days of standby, against 14 hours of talk time and 10 days of standby on the iPhone 6.

Storage came in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB, with no 32GB tier at any point in its life. The finishes were silver, gold and space grey.

It was announced on 9 September 2014 at the 'Wish we could say more' event at the Flint Center in Cupertino, went up for pre-order on 12 September and reached shops on 19 September, priced from $299 with a two-year contract.
