Notes

Apple updated both of its phone sizes in September 2015, and the iPhone 6s Plus was the 5.5-inch model, starting at $299 on a two-year contract or $749 without one. The outside barely changed from the iPhone 6 Plus. The screen stayed at 5.5 inches and 1920 by 1080, but the phone grew to 192g from 172g and to 7.3mm deep from 7.1mm, because of what Apple had added inside.

The main addition was 3D Touch, a display that could sense how hard it was being pressed. A light press previewed a message or a link and a firmer press opened it, gestures Apple named Peek and Pop. Pressing an app icon on the home screen produced a short list of Quick Actions.

The case used 7000 series aluminium, the alloy Apple said came from the aerospace industry, and the company described the cover glass as the strongest on any smartphone. The A9 chip had the M9 motion coprocessor built into it. Rose gold joined gold, silver and space grey as a fourth finish.

Both phones moved to a 12-megapixel camera with 4K video at 3840 by 2160, Live Photos and a 5-megapixel front camera with Retina Flash. One camera feature was held back for the bigger phone, as it had been the year before. Optical image stabilisation was extended to video on the iPhone 6s Plus only.

The battery figures stayed where the iPhone 6 Plus had set them, at up to 24 hours of talk time on 3G, 14 hours of HD video, 80 hours of audio and 16 days of standby.

It was announced on 9 September 2015 at the 'Hey Siri, give us a hint' event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, went up for pre-order on 12 September and reached shops on 25 September, priced from $299 with a two-year contract.
