Notes

The iPod nano (1st generation) cost $199 and took the place of the iPod mini, which Apple stopped selling on the same day. Flash memory went in where the mini had kept a tiny hard disk, and that is how Apple got it down to a quarter of an inch thick, thinner than a pencil.

The click wheel carried over and a colour screen came with it, an inch and a half across, which the mini had never had. Photographs could go on an iPod this small for the first time, and a charge lasted around 14 hours.

Every ordinary iPod before this one had been white, so a black iPod nano (1st generation) in a shop window was something new. The U2 Special Edition had been black since 2004, but it sat outside the normal range.

It went on sale in 2GB and 4GB versions at $199 and $249, and a 1GB model followed in February 2006 at $149. Steve Jobs called it the biggest revolution since the original iPod.

The screens scratched very easily and some of them cracked, which owners took Apple to court over. The case settled in 2009, with a $22.5 million fund paying $25 to anyone who had bought a nano without a case.

It was announced on 7 September 2005 at the event Apple trailed with the line ‘1,000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again.’ It went on sale worldwide the same day, priced from $199.
