Notes

The iPhone 12 was Apple's standard phone at $799, and it arrived without a charger. Apple took the power adapter and the wired EarPods out of the box, saying the change would reduce mining and cut shipping emissions by making the packaging smaller. It was widely mocked as cost-cutting, and widely copied within two years.

The shape changed for the first time since 2014. Apple dropped the rounded sides it had used since the iPhone 6 and went back to flat edges, much like the iPhone 5, a look the range has kept ever since.

Every model in this generation supported 5G, the faster mobile network standard that had reached Android phones a year or so earlier. Apple also fitted a new front cover it called Ceramic Shield, claiming four times better drop performance than the iPhone 11.

MagSafe appeared on the back, a ring of magnets around the wireless charging coil. It made the charger line up by itself rather than needing to be positioned, and started a range of magnetic cases, wallets and stands.

Two cameras sat on the back, an ultra wide and a new wide lens that let in more light. Five colours were offered: blue, green, black, white and (PRODUCT)RED, with 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of storage.

It was announced on 13 October 2020 at the 'Hi, Speed event', with pre-orders from 16 October, and reached customers on 23 October 2020 at $799.
