Notes

The iPhone 13 was Apple's standard phone at $799, and it stayed on sale for almost three years, longer than any iPhone before it. Apple kept it in the range as the cheap option while the 14 and 15 came and went, and only dropped it in September 2024.

The two cameras on the back moved from a vertical stack to a diagonal arrangement. That was not styling. The new main camera used a bigger sensor with larger pixels, gathering what Apple rated as 47 percent more light, and it no longer fitted in the old layout.

Sensor-shift stabilisation came down from the previous year's Pro Max, where the sensor itself moves to counteract a shaky hand rather than the lens. Until this point it had been kept for the most expensive iPhone.

Cinematic mode was introduced as the headline software trick, recording video with a shallow depth of field and shifting focus between subjects by itself, in the manner of a film camera.

Entry storage doubled from 64GB to 128GB with no price rise, and the notch at the top of the screen shrank for the first time since 2017. Five colours were offered: pink, blue, midnight, starlight and (PRODUCT)RED.

It was announced on 14 September 2021, with pre-orders from 17 September, and reached customers on 24 September 2021 at $799.
