Notes

The iPhone 14 was Apple's standard phone at $799, and the most unusual thing about it was how long Apple kept selling it. The iPhone 15 arrived a year later and the iPhone 14 simply carried on at a lower price, lasting until February 2025, when the cheaper iPhone 16e finally took its place.

Buyers in the United States got a phone with no SIM slot at all. Apple removed the tray from American models, making this the first iPhone anywhere that could only use an eSIM, while every other country kept the physical slot.

Two safety features arrived with this generation. Crash Detection uses the sensors to recognise a serious car accident and call the emergency services by itself. Emergency SOS via satellite followed that November, letting the phone send for help with no mobile signal, provided you can point it at a satellite passing overhead. Apple made it free for two years.

The camera stayed at 12MP but gained a larger sensor and a faster lens, and the front camera got autofocus for the first time. Apple kept the A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13 Pro rather than fitting a new one, reserving the A16 for the Pro models.

Five colours were offered: midnight, blue, starlight, purple and (PRODUCT)RED. A yellow version followed in March 2023. Storage ran from 128GB to 512GB.

It was announced on 7 September 2022, with pre-orders from 9 September, and reached customers on 16 September 2022 at $799.
