Notes

The iPhone 14 Pro was Apple's smaller professional phone at $999, and it replaced the notch that had sat at the top of every iPhone since 2017 with the Dynamic Island. Apple still needed space for the Face ID sensors and front camera, so rather than disguise the gap it made it part of the software: a black pill that stretches, splits and shrinks around timers, calls, directions and music.

The screen could now stay on. Earlier iPhones went dark the moment you put them down, and the iPhone 14 Pro was the first that could keep showing the time and your wallpaper at a reduced brightness. It also reached 2,000 nits outdoors, which Apple said was the brightest screen in any phone at the time.

The main camera jumped from 12MP to 48MP, the first increase since 2015. Most photos still came out at 12MP, combining groups of pixels for better low-light results, with the full detail available if you switched on ProRAW.

Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via satellite were introduced too, the latter letting the phone send for help with no mobile signal by pointing it at the sky.

Four finishes were offered: deep purple, silver, gold and space black, with storage from 128GB to 1TB.

It was announced on 7 September 2022, with pre-orders from 9 September, and reached customers on 16 September 2022 at $999.
