Notes

The iPhone 15 Pro Max was Apple's largest and dearest phone at $1,199, and the only one in the range with a 5x zoom. Fitting a 120mm lens into a body under 9mm thick meant folding the light path inside the camera using a tetraprism, which bounces the image back and forth to get the distance it needs. There was no room for the same arrangement in the smaller 15 Pro, which stopped at 3x.

Everything else matched its smaller sibling. Titanium replaced stainless steel, making it lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max despite the same 6.7-inch screen. The ring/silent switch gave way to the Action button, and Lightning gave way to USB-C running at USB 3 speeds.

The A17 Pro chip was the first in any phone built on a 3-nanometre process, bringing hardware ray tracing and console games to iPhone for the first time.

One difference in the specification sheet is easy to miss. The Pro Max started at 256GB rather than 128GB, so the gap between the two models was $200 in price but also double the storage.

Four colours were offered: black, white, blue and natural titanium.

It was announced on 12 September 2023, with pre-orders from 15 September, and reached customers on 22 September 2023 at $1,199.
