Notes

Apple charged $1,199 for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, and the first thing it bought was screen. At 6.9 inches it was the largest display Apple had put on an iPhone, running at 2868 by 1320 pixels, and Apple said the Pro line carried the thinnest borders of any Apple product. The titanium case came in black, natural, white and desert finishes.

Battery life was the other reason to take the bigger phone. Apple rated the iPhone 16 Pro Max at 33 hours of video playback against 27 on the smaller model, and called it the best battery life on any iPhone to that point.

Everything else was shared. Both phones gained Camera Control, a side button with a capacitive sensor that opens the camera, takes the shot and changes zoom or exposure as a finger slides along it. Both had the 48-megapixel Fusion camera, the new 48-megapixel ultra wide and the 5x telephoto, which reached the smaller Pro for the first time this year. Video recorded at 4K and 120 frames a second in Dolby Vision, and four studio-quality microphones were fitted.

One difference was in storage, and it explains the price. The iPhone 16 Pro Max started at 256GB where the iPhone 16 Pro started at 128GB, so the entry price was $200 higher for two phones with the same A18 Pro chip and the same cameras. Both ran to 1TB.

Apple Intelligence was not on either phone at launch. Apple said the first features would arrive in beta the following month as part of iOS 18.1.

It was announced on 9 September 2024 at the ‘It’s Glowtime’ event at Apple Park, went up for pre-order on 13 September and reached shops on 20 September, priced from $1,199.
