Notes

The iPhone 6 was Apple's move to a bigger screen, a 4.7-inch phone starting at $199 with a two-year contract. It retired the 4-inch shape Apple had used since 2012. The screen carried 38% more viewing area than the iPhone 5s at 1334 by 750 pixels, and the body was thinner than the phone it replaced at 6.9mm, with rounded edges and a glass front that curved into the aluminium case.

Inside was the A8 chip paired with an M8 motion coprocessor. The 8-megapixel iSight camera had a new sensor with Focus Pixels for faster autofocus, though optical image stabilisation went only to the larger iPhone 6 Plus. Apple Pay arrived alongside these two phones as a free iOS 8 update in October, using Touch ID to authorise payments in American shops.

Storage ran 16GB, 64GB and 128GB, with nothing at 32GB. The 128GB option was the first of that size on any iPhone. The iPhone 6 was sold in silver, gold and space grey.

Apple sold more than 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units over the opening weekend, a record for the company at that point. Tim Cook said Apple could have sold many more if supply had allowed, and the two phones were expected to be on sale in 115 countries before the end of the year.

It was announced on 9 September 2014 at the 'Wish we could say more' event at the Flint Center in Cupertino, went up for pre-order on 12 September and reached shops on 19 September, priced from $199 with a two-year contract.
